FAQ

What is Talkinator(tm)?

Talkinator is a service that provides free, no-signup, no registration group discussion rooms. Its sister site Mailinator(tm) pioneered the concept of no-sign-up email; Talkinator is a logical extension of this idea to group messaging.

So you've invented a system whereby multiple people in geographically disparate places can communicate in real-time with each other through an abstraction of a virtual "group discussion" over the Internets? Thats wonderful!

Um. no. That would be called IRC (invented in 1988) or its predecessor MUT or something even before that that we don't know of. Obviously, the idea of internet chat and IM is nothing new, but hopefully Talkinator brings it back down to its fundamental roots. No registration. No sign-in.

What is your Privacy Policy?

Just like Mailinator and IRC, the Privacy Policy here is simply: THERE IS NONE. Talkinator/ManyBrain doesn't ask, require or even want your personal information - however, rooms are only as private as you keep them. No messages are encrypted and its theoretically possible for someone to guess the name of your talkinator room.

In addition - DO NOT give anyone your personal information in talkinator room. Its completely insecure. Anything you type in a talkinator room could be seen by anyone (including, but not limited to, freaks, weirdos, internet crazies, software engineers, nutjobs, probable nutjobs, likely nutjobs, really likely nutjobs, really really likely nutjobs, CAPS-LOCK-LOVERS, the Police, the FBI, the CIA, and your mom). Keep that in mind.

So I can put a talkinator room in my own website/blog/profile?

Yes! Every talkbox has a button to "get the code" or you can click GetTalkinator! above. Please read the Terms of Service.

So if there is no sign-up, what name will I have when I enter a room?

When including the code, you can specify a unique username for each user (see the GetTalkinator page for more details) otherwise, one will be generated for you. Regardless, you can change it with the "name change" button or just type "/nick yourNewName".

How can I tell if someone in a talkinator room is a noob?

Their nick will be "yourNewName".

How many people can be in a talkinator room?

This changes - at some point, there are simply too many messages flying by for you to make any sense of them. What's that limit? Who knows. We sure don't. We'll be tweaking the number over the next few months to see what works.

Is this service free?

Obviously, the bandwidth and servers required to run Talkinator are not free, thus, a pricing structure for larger volume sites may be introduced at some point. However, the current plan is that talkinators for smaller sites will remain free.

Can I meet girls here?

No.

Why not!?

Well, as we mentioned, there is no sign-up and no registration. Thus, regardless of the steamy-hot convo you've been having with FoxyChic01 in the l00keen4Luv room for the past hour, she is probably actually a dude in his early 40's, bald and with a goatee messing with you.

You simply have no way of knowing for sure. Not to mention, single women probably don't have to resort to anonymous chat systems to meet guys. And honestly, if you do, then maybe you might want to re-think your Stra-Ta-Gee.

Can I get a private room?

Private rooms exist precisely as long as you keep them a secret. Rooms can have very long names and quite literally there are trillions of possible room names. Pick an obscure name - for example, naming a room "SEX" is very bad. Naming a room "BunkyBunkyWoowoo11" is very good!

Obviously, if you put a talkinator room on a public website, its not going to be private for long.

Do you think the FBI lurks in Talkinator rooms?

Oh heck yeah. They're one of our biggest feature requesters! (and bug reporters). There's CIA, IRS, and KGB too (and you thought they were disbanded - just what they wanted you to think).

Who is Natorbot?

Its probably best if you just ask him.
